A first half strike from Charlie Gunson saw Sholing beat ten-man Hanwell Town 1-0 in a fiercely contested Southern League Premier South match at the Powerday Stadium.
Hanwell started the game well before defender Harry Seabrook was sent off for two yellow cards in the 31st minute when he prevented a counterattack from the visitors.
Chris Moore's side briefly struggled to regroup and were punished when Gunson fired home from distance in the 38th minute.
The Geordies then made changes and fought impressively for the rest of the game. A neutral may have been forgiven for thinking Sholing were the side a player short when Hanwell were pushing for an equaliser late on.
Chris Moore made two changes from the side that drew 0-0 with Gloucester City in midweek, Chris Regis came in for Rod Orlando-Young and Jordan Edwards returned to the side to replace Nathanael Boayke.
Hanwell started brightly with Edwards finding space on the left before firing over the bar from a tight angle.
Edwards' set pieces were causing Sholing all sorts of problems and his corner found Mat Mackenzie unmarked at the back post. Unfortunately, the midfielder could only glance his header wide.
Hanwell's confident start continued when Chris Regis beat his man on the left, however, the wingers cross couldn't find a waiting Hanwell attacker.
Sholing finally had their first chance in the 11th minute and should've opened the scoring. Top Scorer Bradley Targett beat Hanwell's defenders and lobbed the ball over the imposing Sam Beasant's head. The Sholing forward then had the goal at his mercy but could only hit the side netting from six yards out.
The next 10 minutes saw Sholing control the ball without creating a clear-cut chance. Captain Jake Hesketh, who played in the Premier League for Southampton as a teenager, had dropped deeper and was linking up well with the visitors' defenders.
After another Hanwell attack was cleared, Seabrook brought down striker Daniel Mason in a foul similar to the one that had earned him his first yellow card.
The referee was left with no choice but to send off the defender, leaving Hanwell short on numbers once again.
In the remaining 10 minutes of the first half manager Moore shuffled his team around in an attempt to reach halftime level.
Sholing took advantage when, following a short corner, the ball found Gunson in space on the edge of the box. His shot was sweetly struck and nestled into the bottom left corner, leaving Beasant with no chance.
This led to more Hanwell changes with Elliot Beynon and Rudi Pache replacing Chris Regis and Kyron Richards.
Hanwell started the second half brightly but were dealt further damage when Mackenzie went down injured in the 51st minute. The midfielder was replaced by Luis Le Paih.
Hanwell continued their surge for an equaliser against the odds but Joe Wilson overhit his cross when in a promising position on the right.
The Geordies had the ball in the net in the 70th minute following a set piece, but the linesman judged Hall to have been offside.
In the hosts final chance of the game Edwards' free kick from the left found Beynon in the box. Unfortunately, the striker couldn't divert the ball towards the goal and Sholing eventually cleared.
The result, one that dropped the Geordies to tenth in the league, does not reflect the mood around the Powerday Stadium following such a positive performance with 10-men.
Hanwell next play on October 5 when they welcome Berkhamsted to the Powerday Stadium in the FA Trophy.
Report by Tyler Eaton
The Geordies continued their fine run of form at the Powerday Stadium, coming away with a draw against relegated Gloucester City, who came down from the National League North in the summer
Chris Moore was forced to make changes to the line up that played last Saturday, Will Hall returning to the centre of defence in place of Dwayne Duncan, Leo Donnellan came in for Callum Woodcock in midfield, Rod Orlando-Young took over the attacking left midfield berth from Kameron English and Nathan Boayke slipped into the attacking midfield spot from Jordan Edwards. Duncan, English and Edwards sitting out with suspensions following the last week's red card tally.
Before the game, Hanwell had only conceded a single goal at home and it took a while for Gloucester to pick their way through the Geordies midfield, with striker King Baidoo looking specially sharp.
The visitors had the best of the opening chances, with defender Jamie Reckord and midfielder Joe Hanks both hitting the target, but Hanwell keeper Sam Beasant was in a 'they shall not pass' mood and saved the opportunities easily.
Just after the half hour, the Geordies thought they had a good shout for a penalty, as Alfie Pendlebury appeared to be brought down on the edge of the box, but the referee decided in the opposite direction, showing the striker a yellow card for simulation.
The half time break was very close, just seconds away, as Baidoo broke through the centre of the Hanwell defence on halfway, but full back Joe Wilson showed his pace and made a textbook tackle in the Hanwell penalty area to deny the Gloucester player.
The second half was not that dissimilar from the first, the action never really getting going, but with just about 20 minutes to go, Gloucester's Ed Williams struck a fine shot that forced Beasant to show his class, blocking the shot by his right hand post.
Although Orlando-Young thought he also had a shout for a penalty just after the Williams chance, the referee didn't agree, and the game from that point just petered away into a solid point for the Geordies.
"Although we had players unavailable through suspension, injury and holidays, I was really pleased by the shift the lads put in today, and although I'm never happy with just a point, all things considered, it was a good, gritty performance.", said Chris Moore, post match.
"Its really important that we make this a difficult place for clubs to come this season, and we have so far, we just need the away form to match it, then we could have quite a ride."
Hanwell will be watching the FA website with interest on Monday, as the draw for the FA trophy will be announced at 1pm, the Geordies joining the competion at this point. Following that, they face Sholing on Tuesday evening, in another fixture at the Powerday.

The Geordies crashed out of the FA Cup to fellow Southern League team Chertsey Town, with a lacklustre display that also saw two Hanwell players dismissed for red cards in the second half, leaving manager Chris Moore somewhat disappointed.
Speaking following the final whistle, “I don’t think we got going at all. I said at halftime, you’ve not really got going but they’ve not yet threatened us, so we need a bit more.”
“Then we go out and we get a player sent off and it kills us a bit. We keep eleven on the pitch, do they beat us, I don’t think so; do we beat them, I don’t think so. Its all about discipline and the two lads let us down today.”
In the first half, neither team had an attempt on goal with Chertsey’s Will Montague and Sam Omperon both hitting the side netting, Alfie Pendlebury getting the ball into the net for Hanwell just before the break, but it was ruled out for offside.
Chris Moore made early changes in the second half, bringing on Mat Mackenzie and Joe Wilson but the move was somewhat nullified by Jordan Edwards being shown a red card for a second bookable offence soon after.
This spurred Chertsey Town on, and keeper Sam Beasant had to make excellent saves at point blank range from Montague and midfielder Conor Lee to keep the visitors out but with 20 minutes to go, the task for the Geordies got even more challenging as winger Kameron English was shown a straight red card.
Hanwell fought with just the nine men on the field to keep the game on level terms, with defender Dan Carr curling a free kick just wide of the Chertsey goal to give the vocal home support some hope, but with 10 minutes to go, the game fell away from the Geordies.
Chertsey Town swung a corner into the far post and Jack Mazzone had the easiest of finishes to give the visitors the advantage, leaving Hanwell the mammoth task of trying to equalise and earn the replay.
It wasn’t to be, as in added time, Sam Omperon confirmed the result for the visitors with a shot past Beasant following a quick break upfield, and so left the Geordies to imagine what might have been.
Hanwell return to Southern League action next Saturday at the Powerday Stadium, for the visit of Gloucester City, kickoff at 3 pm.

Hanwell showed character and togetherness as they twice battled back from going a goal down to take a deserved point at early season pacesetters, Walton & Hersham.
Chances were at a premium in the early stages as both sides sized each other up as the rain teemed down in north Surrey.
It was the Swans, though, that broke the deadlock as Lucas Defise found space down the right flank. His cross found Dawid Rogalski who fired home to open the scoring.
The Geordies were not behind for long as Alfie Pendlebury was brought down in the penalty area. The referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Jordan Edwards, who scored twice at Taunton, stepped up and sent the keeper the wrong way for his ninth goal in all competitions.
Having got back on level terms before the break, Hanwell were stunned after the restart as they struggled to clear their lines. Lucas Defise found space and fired the ball past Sam Beasant.
This Hanwell team, though, never gives up and, roared on by their fans stood in the rain behind the goal, continued to press and probe for an equaliser.
That came just after the hour mark as Mat Mackenzie, who had his original shot blocked, fired home from the rebound to level the scores.
Both sides had chances to find a winner but neither could find the target. Tempers flared at the final whistle with both Dwayne Duncan and Dawid Rogalski receiving red cards for their part in the melee.
After back to back away draws, Hanwell are back at home on Saturday as they host Chertsey in the FA Cup.
Hanwell made the westward journey once more, and this time fought out an enthralling Southern League Premier South match against Taunton Town, which ended with the points being shared, yet it could've been a victorious afternoon for the Geordies.
Manager Chris Moore made one change, bringing in Joe Wilson in at right back, with Dan Carr switching to left back.
However, Hanwell were put on the back foot very early as Taunton's Archie Ferris picked up a long ball over the top and finished neatly under Hanwell keeper Sam Beasant with just 5 minutes played.
The home side were not destined to hold their lead for long, as man of the moment Jordan Edwards’ first time shot from the edge of the box beat the dive of Taunton keeper Adam Parkes to fly into the bottom corner.
The game had barely settled down again before Hanwell took the lead on 17 minutes.
Following a poor clearance, Hanwell midfielder Callum Woodcock's header back into the box was anticipated by defender Dwayne Duncan and he managed to nod the ball past Parkes just before the keeper could get there.
Taunton had only recorded the one win in their opening 5 matches, yet midway through the half, they had an equaliser; Jake Hodgson connecting cleanly at the back post to head home a corner kick.
It looked like the teams would enter the half time break all square but Jordan Edwards had other ideas.
The Geordies were awarded a free kick just outside the penalty area, Edwards stepped up and curled the kick round the near side of the defensive wall, beating Parkes comfortably to send Hanwell in at the break with the lead.
The second half began with both teams pushing for another goal, Hanwell to extend the lead and Taunton to get back on level terms but it was the home team that were successful.
Just after the hour, the ball wasn't cleared by the Geordies, and it ricocheted around the penalty area before Taunton captain Tom Smith was on hand to poke the ball into the net past keeper Sam Beasant.
The home side then forced the Geordies on the back foot, and ten minutes after scoring the equaliser, Smith let fly with a shot from well over 25 yards out. This time though, Beasant was able to fling himself across goal to palm it over the bar.
Taunton kept pushing for the winner, forcing Hanwell to defend deep, yet it was the Geordies who might have snatched it at the death, deep in additional time.
Hanwell won the ball deep inside their own half and broke forward quickly, the ball finding Nathan Boayke on the edge of the Taunton box, but his shot was blocked. It rebounded to Woodcock and as he let fly with the shot, a Taunton defender threw himself in front of the shot and it was deflected away, much to the home fans relief.
Post match, manager Chris Moore was a little frustrated with the final score.
“We're going away disappointed, when you come down to a place like Taunton, you’re looking at would you take a draw? Potentially, but it’s a real shame that we couldn’t see it out, as other than the lapse in concentration for the third goal, we defended really well.”
“As I said in the dressing room just now, we'd could’ve lost a game like this last season, and yet we could've nicked it at the end.”
Hanwell now make the short midweek trip to Walton & Hersham for a Tuesday night matchup against the current league leaders, with the Geordies currently sitting in 6th place. On Saturday 14th, they then return to FA Cup action, with a home tie against Chertsey Town at the Powerday Stadium, kickoff at 3pm.
1 Sam Beasant, 2 Joe Wilson, 3 Dan Carr, 4 Callum Woodcock, 5 Dwayne Duncan, 6 Harry Seabrook, 7 Kameron English, 8 Mat MacKenzie, 9 Alfie Pendlebury, 10 Jordan Edwards, 11 Rod Orlando-Young (Nathenael Boayke 86’).
Substitutes
12 Kyron Richards, 14 Luis Le Paih, 15 Nathenael Boayke, 16 Leo Donnellan, 17 Ezekiel Coker.
A crowd of 153 saw the next generation of Geordies bow out of the FA Youth Cup with their heads held high after an ill-tempered 2-0 reverse to Hillingdon Borough.
During an even first half, Hillingdon had the better of the chances; the best of them came when Mirko Jovanovic broke free down the left flank. His shot was well parried by Reggie Virdee but Dooho Park mishit his shot well wide of the goal.
At the other end, Hanwell's best chance came when Danny Gobishavi produced a vicious shot from 25 yards that dipped and swerved with Adin Balic just about equal to it in the Hillingdon goal.
The game became more and more ill-tempered, with a number of skirmishes occurring.
It was the captain, Matija Jovanovic, who broke the deadlock in the second half as he fired home as the young Geordies failed to deal with a set piece. Jovanovic had his second soon after after Virdee couldn't repel a powerful shot away from danger.
Hanwell were clearly frustrated by the way the game was going and Adam Tallo saw red for two bookable offences.
The game ended on a sour note as, after the final whistle, Hillingdon players continued to goad their Hanwell counterparts. Borough defender Mohamed Abdi received a red card for his behaviour after the final whistle.
Hanwell Town booked a date with Chertsey Town in the FA Cup Second Qualifying Round after hitting Sheppey United for six at the Powerday Stadium with Jordan Edwards bagging a hat-trick.
Edwards and strike partner Alfie Pendlebury, who scored a brace, had their own goal of the season competition as the Geordies ran riot. Joe Wilson also took a minute after coming on for his Hanwell debut to register his first goal.
But the former Chesham striker was the talk of the Toon as with his final goal; a curling effort from outside the box into the top corner.
Edwards reflected: “I enjoyed that one. Most importantly, we got the win and got through to the next round but I enjoyed my hat-trick.
“The first two are goals that you rack up. They can be the most pleasing as they often go unnoticed. The last one was one of the special goals of my career. It was great to see Alfie grab two goals – it always helps with confidence when you score.
“Come Saturday (at Taunton), it’s a different story. We’ve got to head down there and put a performance in and focus on the league. We can’t get too carried away.”
After Saturday’s 1-1 draw, Chris Moore made one change with Rod Orlando-Young coming into the side for his first start in Black and White.
Hanwell made the brighter start and continued to probe the Sheppey goal before breaking through just before the half-hour mark. Kameron English released Dan Carr down the right flank and his cross into the box fell to Edwards, who fired home from close range.
Sheppey were dangerous on the break but, shortly after half-time, the Step Four side found themselves with a mountain to climb as Pendlebury spun his defender before curling a shot into the top corner.
The second goal lifted Hanwell and their raucous fans behind the goal and the Geordies smelled blood. A tired clearance was intercepted and the ball found its way to Edwards, who made no mistake with just over 20 minutes remaining. Three minutes later, Pendlebury grabbed his second as he curled home and the tie was over as a contest.
Chris Moore withdrew Pendlebury and Rohart-Brown, bringing on Zeeks Coker and Joe Wilson and the pair combined with Wilson firing home from the edge of the box to make it 5-0 with 11 minutes remaining.
As the clock struck 90 minutes, Edwards completed his hat-trick as he picked up the ball on the left flank and beautifully curled the ball past the keeper to make it six of the best.
The night got worse for Sheppey as a tired challenge from the, already booked, Eitel Moumi Goueth saw him receive his marching orders in the closing stages.
Hanwell’s reward for their cup success sees them host Chertsey Town on Saturday 14 September. Before that, though, a trip to Taunton awaits.
