Fielding a side that showed several changes from that which had beaten Tooting & Mitcham in The London Senior Cup earlier in the week, Town had their third successive 1-0 win away at Sholing.
The Geordies took the lead in the sixth minute when Sholing's Reece Wylie pulled Alfie Pendlebury’s arm back in their penalty area and the match referee immediately pointed to the penalty spot.
Dan Carr made no mistake from the spot kick sending the Sholing keeper Pat Nash the wrong way.
In the 15th minute Pendlebury was yellow carded for what from our viewing position was an innocuous tackle on Pat Nash. This card proved to be one of the many shown by the match referee who could not have been entirely happy with his overall performance in a game between two competitive sides.
Midway through the half, Sholing did find the net but their Michael Folivi, Sholing's most potent attacker on the day was some yards offside. Minutes later Town received their second yellow card, this time it was full back Robert Nditi and again there was some question as to what exactly it was for.
The game meandered on with the ball more out of play than on it but we almost doubled our lead late in the half when Joe Waite latched onto a poor back pass but an excellent tackle by the home side's Joe Rabbetts blocked his shot.
Hanwell made a bright start to the second half with Taylor Miles bursting into the Sholing penalty area and finding Alfie with a good shooting chance but he dragged his shot wide.
At the other end Folivi had an excellent chance for the home side but he shot wide. As the game progressed Sholing enjoyed more and more possession but rarely looked like troubling Sam Beasant in goal such was the excellence of those in front of him, particularly central defenders Dwayne Duncan and Harry Seabrook.
However there was another twist in the tale with Pendlebury picking up a second yellow card shortly after the hour mark when his flailing arm was alleged by the Sholing player to have been a deliberate strike in the face and he made the most of it. The referee after consultation with his assistant was quick to flash the red card!
The remaining period of the game saw Sholing constantly attacking but with everybody working their socks off we held onto our narrow lead until the final whistle.
Town had one scare four minutes into time added on when Sholing's Bradley Targett went down in the box but the referee waved away their appeals, showing yellow cards to three Sholing players before blowing the final whistle to ensure that it was a happy coach back home.
