Chertsey Town held on to beat Hanwell Town 2-1 in a dramatic midweek clash at The Oliver Connell & Son Community Stadium.
Two second-half goals from Daniel Berry and Aaron Fernandez put the visitors in front and despite Kam English pulling one back for Hanwell, the Curfews managed to navigate an action-packed finale to secure their second win of the season.
Chertsey had the better of a somewhat subdued first half and created lots of chances, but just lacked a quality finish to break the deadlock.
Whatever was said at half time seemed to initially work for Hanwell though and they started the second half much brighter, with Kit Elliott having a couple of opportunities.
Chertsey’s opener in the 54thminute was therefore somewhat against the run of plan, as Daniel Berry scored with a deflected finish. Chertsey went further ahead nine minutes later after Aaron Fernandez converted with a brilliant loopy header.
Hanwell kept on pressing though and eventually halved the deficit in the 81stminute. Dan Carr drove in from the left and put the ball on a plate for Kam English to score from close range.
But not long after, Hanwell’s comeback attempts were made harder when defender, Roberto Nditi, was shown a straight red for a challenge close to the halfway line.
The Geordies didn’t give up though. Substitute, Seth Patrick, saw his injury-time screamer hit the crossbar and drop agonisingly short of the goal line.
And the drama didn’t end there. After the final whistle, Hanwell’s Addison Garnett was also sent off after a coming together during theChertseycelebrations.
