Chertsey Town (0) 1 v Hanwell Town (2) 2

The Pitching in Isthmian League South Central Division

Saturday 19th March 2022

We followed up our win in Guernsey with an even better result before a crowd of 403 by beating promotion seeking rivals Chertsey Town 2-1.

There were no changes from the side that had beaten Guernsey and on a windy afternoon we got away to the perfect start when in the ninth minute a terrific cross field pass by Dan Carr found Gareth Chendlik unmarked in the Chertsey penalty area. Gareth cut inside with the intention of firing off a shot but finding his way blocked he played the ball into the path of Sam Saunders who made no mistake firing across keeper Nick Jupp into the far corner of the net. Play went from end to end without either keeper being troubled before we increased our lead in the 23rd minute when a stunning strike by Dernell Wynter from around 25 yards saw the ball fly into the Chertsey net.  Chertsey fought back strongly and former Town player Mason Welch-Turner might have done better than to fire the ball over the bar after breaking through into our penalty area. Whilst Chertsey had the more of the play we always looked dangerous in breakaways.

Chertsey got themselves back into the game in the 57th minute when a long cross by Magnus Abisoun found Jake Baxter on the far edge of the penalty area and he chipped the ball back across Hugo Sobte into our net. At this stage, Chertsey were right back in the game but half time substitute Scott Day was then sent off for a studs up tackle on George Nicholas . This changed the dynamic of the game considerably as searching for an equaliser, gaps in the Chertsey back line began to appear and in quick succession, Jupp saved a header from Gareth after another cross from Dan and then saved an effort from distance from Sam. We made our first substitution with Jack Hutchinson replacing the injured Romario Jonas but we maintained our three man back line with Massimo Giamattei dropping back to left back and man of the match Dwayne Duncan switching to the right whilst Calum Duffy maintained his role in the middle.  Chertsey continued to press for the equaliser but our defence stood firm with Hugo doing well to collect two high crosses into our box. We always looked the more likely side to score on breakaway and Dernell missed two excellent scoring opportunities in quick succession. In the final few minutes, Ogo Obi became our second substitute replacing Gareth, who had worked extremely hard up front.

Side: Hugo Sobte, Dan Carr, Romario Jonas, George Nicholas, Dwayne Duncan, Calum Duffy, Sam Saunders, Harry Rush (c), Gareth Chendlik, Darnell Wynter and Massimo Giamattei.
