Hanwell Town 1 - Tiverton Town 0

Hanwell continued their fine start to the season with this hard fought victory over their visitors from Devon. After the game manager Chris Moore said that he was particularly delighted that no complacency had set in after three straight victories at this higher level. The win was based on a sound defence, with Calum Duffy to the fore, and a hard-working, midfield orchestrated by Sam Saunders. However, it was Hanwell's keeper Hugo Sobte who was the early hero of the day. With less than three minutes gone he foiled Kane Simpson who looked certain to score after a defensive error had left him clear.

Hanwell overcame the early scare and threatened to score when Sam Saunders cross saw Jack Hutchinson go close with a first time shot. Sam himself then went close, whistling a free kick narrowly over the bar, after George Nicholas had been fouled. After twenty-five minutes Kweku Lucan appeared to be tugged back as he went for goal. The striker managed to remain on his feet and force a save from Lewis Williams in the Tiverton goal. What would have happened had the Hanwell front man gone down, a red card for the last defender, or a yellow for an alleged dive if the referee saw it that way?

Hanwell were having greater possession, but Tiverton looked extremely dangerous on the break. Hugo was called into action on the half hour mark, diving at the feet of Simpson as he battled with Connagh Wilks. The final minutes of the half saw Matthew Buchan having two gilt-edged chances. The first saw him head over a Tom Purrington cross from close range, while the second saw a second sprawling save from Hugo when a goal looked inevitable in a one-on-one situation. As the half entered added-on time, Jack Hutchinson, urged on by the Hanwell faithful, drove forward from midfield before slipping the ball to the speedy Kweku Lucan who put Hanwell ahead, a timely goal that sent the home supporters off for their half-time refreshments in good spirits.

Most of the second half resembled the first, with Hanwell having more possession and better field position but Tiverton, particularly in the person of Niall Thompson, looking dangerous on the break. A promising move started by Jack, and continued by Mack Miskin led to Sam setting up Adam Laaref but his shot was blocked for a corner. Minutes later Harry Rush found Isaac Olorunfemi wide on the right. The full back’s ball into the box just needed a touch but Adam could not quite get to it.

Into the final quarter of the game Hanwell made two changes. Mark Waters replaced the industrious Jack, who seemed to be injured, and Chid Onokwai came on for Kweku.  As the game entered the closing stages Tiverton were getting on the ball more and Hanwell’s lead was looking rather slender. However, it was now the Geordies who were looking dangerous on the break, particularly through Adam and Chid.

With the three minutes of indicated added-on long gone, the visitors almost snatched the equaliser they felt they deserved. A deep ball into the area was headed across the box by Matthew Britton where Kane Simpson headed narrowly over. A feeling of relief washed over the home Supporters at the Powerday, culminating in a roar of relief and pleasure when the final whistle was eventually blown.
