Beaconsfield Town 2 - Hanwell Town 2

Just forty eight hours after our home win against Tiverton, we made the short trip to Beaconsfield Town for the first meeting between the clubs for five seasons. Our side showed several changes from that which had beaten Tiverton. Sam Saunders was unavailable, whilst Connagh Wilks, Conrad Lucan and George Nicholas dropped to the bench after their efforts at the weekend. Into the side came Matthew MacKenzie making his debut, Dwayne Duncan making his first start of the season and Mark Waters recovered from his injury on the opening day of the season. The changes meant a change in formation with MacKenzie, a full back by trade finding himself out on the right wing.

Our run of three clean sheets on the trot was broken in just the fourth minute of the game when Daniel Bradshaw cut through on the right. Hugo was only able to parry his fierce shot into the path of Nathan Minhas who fired into an empty net. Beaconsfield continued to dominate the opening stages but suffered a blow in just the tenth minute when experienced Samuel Togwell suffered a head injury which led to him being replaced by Adam Martin. Despite this, Beaconsfield continued to boss the game and we were fortunate when from a free kick into our penalty area, another experienced player Scott Donnelly saw his header hit our crossbar and we scrambled the ball to safety.

Minhas then shot across the face of our goal whilst at the other end Chid Onokwai had an effort scrambled to safety after the first of a succession of long throws from MacKenzie. Ten minutes from the interval, Minhas should have put the home side two up but fired over the bar when Luke Neville found him unmarked in our penalty area. Five minutes before half time we almost got back into the game when a free kick by Hugo from his own half, beat R’Avan Constable in the home side’s goal only for the ball to hit the bar and bounce to safety. The half time whistle arrived with us being grateful to be only one goal behind.

We made a significant change at the interval, with Conrad Lucan coming on to replace Mack Miskin. Isaac Olorunfemi switched from right to left back enabling MacKenzie to drop back into his more favoured full back position. However, within three minutes of the restart we were two down. Adam Laaref who had a disappointing game lost the ball inside our half and the ball was swiftly transferred out to the right wing and from the resultant cross, Minhas scored his second goal of the game to put the home side two up.

Play switched from end to end, with us playing much better in this half and we were thrown a lifeline on the hour mark when from a corner on the right by Harry Rush, Calum Duffy was pushed to the ground as he went for the ball and a penalty kick was awarded. Chid made no mistake from the kick and we were back in the game.

Play became very open with the ball going from one end to the other but defences were dominating so it was with some relief when we were awarded a second penalty in the eightieth minute. Despite some furious protests from Beaconsfield, the referee stuck to his guns after Chid had been man handled in the area . This time it was Conrad who took the spot kick and again Constable was beaten.

Both sides had chances in a frantic final ten minutes. Hugo turned a header from Mark Nisbet around the post and we managed to scramble the ball clear and then Chid failed to find Conrad when we were in a two on one position. What was surprising is that in a game when it was difficult to recall a dangerous tackle that the match referee had issued ten yellow cards, five to each side !!
