Eastbourne Town - 03/09/22

Eastbourne Town 0 - Hanwell Town 2

We advanced into the second qualifying round of The Emirates FA Cup with a far more dominant display than the scoreline shows. We made further changes from that which had played Beaconsfield Town earlier in the week with a 4-2-2 line up. In the back line, Matthew MacKenzie started in a full back spot with Mack Niskin dropping to the bench, Connagh Wilks replaced the unavailable Calum Duffy, George Nicholas took his place in the midfield with Conrad Lucan dropping out whilst Shomari Barnwell came in to play up front with Chid Onokwai with Adam Laaref also dropping to the bench.

On arrival we found that the ground was immediately next to The Saffrons Ground, a famous venue of Sussex County Cricket Club over the years so we were able to watch a little cricket before our game commenced.

This was to be a game that we dominated from start to finish before a crowd of 285, many of whom having made the journey from Hanwell to watch the game as well as those on the team coach. That we did not win the game by a larger margin was in part due to the display of the Eastbourne keeper Chris Winterton and the defence around him as they were under constant pressure for large portions of the game. In the opening minutes of the game, Winterton in quick succession turner a fierce Dwayne Duncan header over the bar and then saved a fierce strike by Chid Onokwai. We lofted several high balls into the Eastbourne goal area but Winterton dealt with these well including some long throws into the goal area by Matt MacKenzie.

There was a brief scare at the other end when a good move by Eastbourne opened up the right side of our defence but full back Harry Simmons drove the ball fiercely across the face of the goal rather than trying to pick out colleagues at the far post.

Half time arrived with the score still 0-0 and concern that we had failed to make our superiority in the first half count. However, we continued to press in the second half and Mark Waters might have done better than a tame left footed shot straight at the keeper when well placed. When eventually we did find the net through Chid, the linesman’s flag was raised.

Shortly afterwards, Chid at the far post slid the ball into the net when it seemed likely that it was going in anyway but once again the flag was raised. We maintained constant pressure on the Eastbourne goal and at last we were rewarded when the hard working Jack Hutchinson kept the ball in play down the touchline before playing it through into the path of Chid who cut in from the by line. His attempted cross was parried by Winterton but only into the path of Matt MacKenzie who swept the ball into the net much to our relief.

We made a triple substitution with Joseph Otudeko, Conrad Lucan and Kain Adom replacing Chid, Shomari Barnwell and Hutchinson with fifteen minutes remaining. Two minutes from time our win was assured when Kain picked up a loose ball midway into the Eastbourne half before cutting inside to sent a great strike into the far corner of the Eastbourne net with Winterton beaten. It was a happy coach load that made the trip home to Hanwell.
